total blood volume : 5600 ml in 70 kg man(contituting 8% of body weight)

average number of erythrocyte :
male-5.4 million/mm3.
female-4.8 million/mm3
high in newly born infants and less in growing children and old age
people living at high altitudes and athletes have higher erythrocyte count

Hemoglobin content
-amount of Hb in 100 ml of blood
male : 15-16 gm/dL
female : 13-14 gm/dL
may reach up to 19 gm/dL in normal newly born infants due to relative intraurine O2 deficiency(hypoxia)

hematocrite value(packed cell volume/PCV)
male- 46 %
female-42 %
greater in venous than arterial blood
increase in dehydration and high altitude due to polycythemia
deacrease in anemia and hydration

MCH(Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin)
-amount of hemoglobin in a single RBC
normal : 25-32 picograms
less than 25 pg called hypochromic

MCV(Mean Corpuscular Volume)
-volume of single RBC
normal : 80-95 cubic micro
less than 80 : microcytes
more than 95 : macrocytes

MCHC(Mean Corpuscular Hb Concentration)
-Hb in 100 ml of packed red cells
normal : 32-38 gm/dL
below normal is hypochromic anemia
